Best Essential Oils for Sleep: Lavender, Cedarwood, Bergamot & More
TL:DR
Essential oils for sleep, like lavender, cedarwood, and bergamot, can reduce anxiety and lower heart rate or blood pressure, helping the body relax and fall asleep when diffused or applied topically. Use them 10–30 minutes before bed (diffuser, roller, inhaler, or diluted body butter) as part of a consistent nighttime routine to promote relaxation and improved sleep quality.
Essential Oils for Better Sleep
Essential oils are a natural way to support healthy sleep patterns for a couple of reasons.
You can easily incorporate them into your nightly routine. Just a few drops into a diffuser and the air in your bedroom becomes filled with a calming and pleasant aroma. You inhale tiny droplets of oil and water vapor that can instantly affect your state of mind.
Essential oils have been studied extensively and the effects that they can have on our emotional states have been well documented. Research shows there are many oils that have a calming or sedative effect on our central nervous system.
What are the Best Essential Oils for Sleep?
Below are the oils I reach for when I’m curating aromatherapy blends that are meant to help with relaxation and sleep. The chemical components of these plants once distilled make them good essential oils for sleeping.

Lavender for Better Sleep
Lavender essential oil is a widely studied and well documented oil for having a calming and relaxing effect on our bodies.
Its key constituents (linalool and linalyl acetate) act on the brain’s calming pathways, reduce sympathetic arousal (heart rate and tension), and have been shown in randomized trials and reviews to improve subjective sleep quality for many people.

Cedarwood for a Quiet Mind
Cedarwood oil, which contains the calming compound cedrol, helps quiet the mind and body so it’s easier to fall asleep. Studies in people and animals show cedrol can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and increase total sleep time.
Clinical use in older adults has shown real improvements in nighttime rest when cedarwood is used alone or in blends.

Ylang Ylang for Easier, Calmer Sleep
Ylang ylang helps quiet the body for sleep by lowering heart rate and blood pressure, which encourages a relaxed, ready-for-bed state. One human trial found inhaling ylang ylang significantly reduced blood pressure and heart rate, supporting its use as a gentle sleep aid.

Bergamot for Stress Relief
Bergamot helps lower stress and physical arousal. It calms the heart rate and eases anxious thoughts, so it’s easier to relax and fall asleep. A randomized crossover trial found using a bergamot aroma before bed improved sleep duration and morning refreshment compared with placebo.

Frankincense for Gentle, Grounded Sleep
Frankincense helps calm the nervous system and ease anxious tension, making it easier to fall into restful sleep. Lab studies show the frankincense compound incensole acetate produces calming, anxiety‑reducing effects in the brain.

Sweet Marjoram to Ease Tension
Sweet marjoram helps quiet the mind and ease physical tension so falling asleep feels easier. Research shows inhaling sweet marjoram reduced stress and anxiety in a high‑stress clinical group, supporting its use as a calming bedtime aroma.

Vetiver for Improved Sleep Quality
Vetiver’s warm, earthy aroma helps calm the nervous system and ease anxious tension so your body can settle for sleep. One randomized trial found vetiver aromatherapy lowered heart rate and systolic blood pressure and improved self‑reported sleep quality after regular use, supporting its use as a gentle bedtime scent.
How to Use Essential Oils for Sleep
There are a variety of ways to experience the benefits of aromatherapy for sleep. One method isn’t better than the other, and you can use multiple methods at the same time.
Diffusing Essential Oils for Sleep
Diffusing a few drops of calming scents at night can gently cue your mind and body to unwind, helping you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper rest.
Using an essential oil diffuser with blends like lavender, cedarwood, vetiver, or ylang ylang supports reduced heart rate and blood pressure, lowers anxiety, relaxes tense muscles, and creates a consistent nighttime routine that signals it’s time for sleep.
There are many different types and styles of diffusers available, some also double as a night light! I recommend adding a few drops into a diffuser and turning it on about a half hour before you plan to go to bed for the night. Your bedroom will be filled with a calming aroma when you are ready for sleep.
I have created two blends of essential oil for sleep that you can diffuse at bedtime. Nighty Night sleep essential oil blend is curated to be safe for children. It is a very simple blend of lavender and vetiver and creates a calming and grounding atmosphere.
Forty Winks sleep diffuser blend is also safe for children as young as 10 with a more complex recipe of wild orange, patchouli, neroli, and sweet marjoram essential oils.
Add a few drops to your diffuser before lights out and allow the calming aroma to become a familiar signal that it is time to rest. With consistent use, Nighty Night and Forty Winks sleep diffuser blend becomes a trusted part of your evening rhythm.
Essential Oil Rollers for Staying Asleep
Essential oil rollers are a great way to apply essential oils to your skin. The essential oils are blended with a carrier oil and diluted to be safe for topical application.
A sleep rollerball makes it easy to use essential oils for sleep as part of a simple nighttime routine. It’s portable, pre‑diluted in a carrier oil, and delivers a gentle, consistent scent that helps you relax and fall asleep.
Using a roller on pulse points combines aromatherapy with soothing touch to reduce anxiety and physical tension.
Apply to your chest, behind your ears, on the back of your neck, and your wrists. The carrier oil helps to carry the essential oils safely through your skin and into your bloodstream. It’s a slower release than inhalation and has a longer lasting effect.
Both Forty Winks and Nighty Night blends are available as portable, travel-friendly rollers so you can build good sleep habits even when you are not at home.
Body Butters Infused with Essential Oils for Sleep and Magnesium Oil
Magnesium body butters infused with sleep-friendly essential oils are a wonderful way to combine deep hydration with aromatherapy for a calmer bedtime.
Made from rich carrier oils like shea and cocoa butter, these butters provide slow, continuous absorption of relaxing essential oils for sleep, so you get long‑lasting support for your nighttime routine.
Our Forty Winks magnesium sleep butter takes this a step further by blending magnesium oil with a soothing essential oil blend to help reduce stress, ease muscle tension, and promote relaxation so your mind and body are ready to fall asleep.
Nighty Night magnesium butter for sleep uses the Nighty Night blend of lavender and vetiver along with magnesium oil, diluted to be safe for children as young as two years old.
Pocket Sleep Support: Using an Inhaler in Your Nighttime Routine
For a fast, targeted reset I reach for an aromatherapy inhaler. It is a compact, travel‑friendly way to access relaxing essential oils for sleep.
Hold the inhaler (a small cotton wick soaked in an essential oil blend) under your nose and inhale while doing calming breathwork; this delivers scent straight to the olfactory membrane and limbic system, which quickly influences emotion, reduces anxiety, and helps the mind and body shift toward rest.
Inhalers are research‑backed as a rapid sleep aid and anxiety reducer, make a simple addition to your nighttime routine, and work well alongside other oils for sleep or an essential oil blend to promote relaxation and improve sleep on the go.
Essential Oils for Kids Sleep
When beginning to use essential oils with young children it is always best to consult with your child’s doctor first.
There are some general guidelines we suggest that you follow:
Less is more: Children’s systems are generally more sensitive than adults and the amount of essential oils necessary to have an effect are less than that of adults. When diffusing in your child’s bedroom 2-3 drops of oil in the diffuser is all that is needed to have the desired effect.
Use products made for children: We created our Nighty Night blend specifically with children in mind. We use oils that have been studied and are considered generally safe, non-toxic and non-irritating. We dilute the oils with carrier oils in our rollerballs and sleep butter at a higher rate in these blends.
Patch test first: When applying a body butter or roll on blend we encourage you to apply a small amount on your child's forearm to test for any skin sensitivity.
